Daniel had grabbed some cans of fruit and, after a struggle opening them, they finally managed to eat. The next hour or so had passed with conversation. Tess and Angela were “River-brats”. It was a derogatory term used to describe young women who had grown up in one of Grand Junction’s wealthier areas near the Colorado River. Tess was nineteen while her sister was sixteen. “Just my luck to get stuck with a pair of brats like you”, Daniel joked sarcastically. “Your turn,” prompted Angela. The mid-morning sun filtered across Willow Creek Road and through the living room window. Daniel stood, bathed in the sunlight, and watched as a zombie shuffled up the road. It was heading north towards the park. For a second he thought about going out there and trying his luck again but changed his mind. What’s the point, he thought to himself. It won’t make any difference. He turned away from the window, crossed the disheveled room and sank down onto a comfortable three seater couch. He stared at the shattered flat screen of the television across the room and sighed as his thoughts turned to recent events. Life had gone downhill
